Call open for the XLII Reina Sofia Prize in Music Composition

The call is open for the XLII edition of the Reina Sofia Prize in Music Composition, with the aim of encouraging and promoting the creation of symphonic music. The prize, which is awarded annually by a jury made up of internationally renowned composers, is endowed with €100,000, the largest in Europe, to ensure the viability of the composer's profession.

This prestigious recognition is possible thanks to the involvement of Her Majesty Queen Sofia and to the fact that the winning work will be premiered and performed by the most important orchestra in Spain: the RTVE Symphony Orchestra.

As part of the money prize, last year we started a collaboration with the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE), which will program and disseminate the winning work during its 2025 tours and concert season.

The Foundation is aware of the importance of creating support networks that promote and make the work of composers visible, so that it is recognized, performed, and listened to.

In addition to obtaining this important recognition, the winner will also be appointed composer of the Xarxa de Músiques de Catalunya, within the Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya concert series, the season following the awarding of the Reina Sofia Prize in Music Composition.

This appointment involves the commissioning of two chamber music works for two different ensembles, freely chosen by the composer from among those participating in the Xarxa de Músiques season. These ensembles will premiere and perform the works throughout the series. The collaboration includes two residencies for the composer and the two chosen ensembles to rehearse the works before they are performed in the concert series.

The deadline for submitting works is December 31, 2024. Those interested in participating will find more information on how to proceed in the Rules of the Competition.
