Serena Sáenz, a former Ferrer-Salat Foundation scholarship recipient, makes her successful debut as a female lead at the Gran Teatre de Liceu

On July 21, a change in the program of the Gran Teatre del Liceu was announced. Nadine Sierra could not play Lucia, from the opera Lucia di Lammermoor, because she was feeling sick, and was replaced by the young Serena Sáenz, who triumphantly burst onto the national opera scene.

Publications such as the magazine Scherzo or La Vanguardia talked about her brilliant performance, highlighting her “musicality, good taste and dazzling high treble notes, as well as a great stage presence”. Audiences and critics defined Sáenz’s Lucia as an exciting and poignant version of Donizetti’s iconic and insane heroine.

Sáenz, born in 1994, defines singing as “a gift, my destiny”. From the age of 12 she studied at the Cor Jove of the Palau de la Música Catalana, and later entered the Liceu Conservatory, where she received the Ferrer-Salat scholarship for a talent and dedication that have earned her widespread recognition throughout Europe.

Brava, Serena!
